Memorial Weekend 2007 = Roller Coaster

Ok Kids. Buckle your seatbelts.

On Thursday morning I got Miss Stella ready for her daily 50 feet stroll next door to Granny Nanny's house before I headed to work. I turned into the driveway and there was Matt (!!!) and Mom. The (!!!) is because my brother does not wake up before 1pm ever (he is a rockstar, you know) so I was shocked to see him. They were just chatting in the driveway and he said that he was just up early and didn't know why. He was leaving to go to DC with a friend's band for one of their shows that night so he had just gotten up early to get ready and whatnot. So we were standing there for a sec when Mom starts "I need to talk to you guys about your Dad. I'm really worried about him..." And she starts crying.

So she tells us that Wednesday evening he said he chest was feeling "pressure" and it started when he picked up Stella to feed her a bottle (which was at 5pm and I was there and OF COURSE he didn't say anything about it at the time...) Mom said he contined to feel kind of bad the rest of the night but was just letting it go.... And Mom was nagging him to go to the Doc or SOMETHING but he wouldn't go. He said it was just indigestion or just feeling sore and tired from work stress or blah blah blah...

So Mom didn't sleep a wink on Wednesday night.

He went to work on Thursday as usual...and Mom asked us for some sort of help because she was just so frustrated that he never listens to her and she was just really worried.

So I went on to work and immediately sent him a nasty-gram e-mail - playing the guilt card of "If I was having chest pressure you would want me to get it checked out so please just go and it's probably nothing but atleast we'll KNOW it's nothing....." I never heard back - which I usually don't get return e-mails from Dad so that wasn't alarming.

Then I put my framed pic of Carol and Stella on my desk. I love having her face to look at to remind me to always be positive when I'm at work. (Which is sometimes a VERY hard task.)

Around 3pm, Mom calls me and says that Dad just called her and he had driven himself to the emergency room and was waiting to be seen because he was still feeling bad... So I just got my stuff together, picked up Mom and Stella, and we went to the hospital to sit with him. We had a leisurely drive there; just chatting - because all we knew, he was just waiting to be seen.

We pull into the parking lot and Mom's cell rings and it's a call from Dad. But it wasn't Dad. It was the Doctor and he just starts talking and Mom starts freaking out....her mouth is open like she's going to cry or scream but nothing is coming out. I start yelling at her to just get out of the car and go in. I reach over and open the door and nearly push her out. "JUST GO INSIDE!!!" So she gets out and runs and I try and find a parking space. My life flashing before my eyes.

I find a spot about 10000000000000 miles away and I get Stella out and all her bags and my bag and Mom's bag and the stroller and book it across the parking lot to the emergency room. When I get there, Mom and a nurse guy are standing there and they tell me he had a heart attack and was taken immediately up to have a catherization and angeoplasty done.

Breakdown.

So we pull it together and the guy escorts us through the hospital up to the waiting room where we wait.

Mom calls Matt who is on his way to DC in a van with a band. He freaks out. He calls friends and tries to get a plan together to get back to Richmond. The band takes their van and their trailer full of equipment to Union Station in DC and drops Matt off and he gets a train ticket and heads home.... Thank you guys!

So, after about 30 minutes, the Doc comes out and tells us that everything is done and looks great. There was a 100% blockage to his main artery and they put in a stint and it's good now.

I have never felt such relief in my entire life.

We make more "updated" phone calls to the people we had made FRANTIC calls to... Mimi, Nanny, Matt.........

We stay in the waiting room for awhile and people start rolling in...Mimi and my aunts, Nanny and my aunt and uncle, the Thaxtons, etc.... Toby comes and gets Stella and takes her home. Mom and their Pastor go back to see Dad and stay with him for awhile in ICU. I went back to see Dad - and he told me all about what happened - he is really really shook up and actually kind of depressed and keeps saying "30 more minutes and I would not be here..."

I go and get Matt from the train station and we come back to see Dad. He's pitiful with all the stuff hooked up to him but he's doing really well....already looking better than he has for weeks. We leave him around 11 pm and head home so he can get some rest - as much as you can in ICU next to the nurse's station with a million beeping machines.

THANK YOU, GOD.

As I was riding around that parking lot, I just kept thinking "Carol! Make him come back! Push him back down here!" And God: "Don't take my Dad!"

Apparently, what happened was that he got to the E-Room and they took him back and hooked him up and his EKG was fine (!!!!!!) so they just told him to lay back and relax a bit and they left the room. Dad said he must have been dozing off because he woke up and felt like he was going to faint....and it all went black....he then remembers people screaming in his face and he was gasping for air and they told him he had had a heart attack and his heart stopped and they had to shock him twice. That's when we got the call in the parking lot.

Friday:
Mom went to the hospital first thing and I stayed home and did the usual morning routine with Stella. My friend Leslie brought us some chicken, some Ukrops sides, and some awesome brownies - all this before she even knew about Dad!! Which was so incredibly sweet, I swear.

Mimi and Cissy showed up to keep Stella while Matt and I went to Carol's Memorial Service.

The service was great. HARD but great. I felt like I was at a clown convention with all of the crazy colors people were wearing and even a big bouquet of balloons!! Starting at 11 was the visitation and everyone was just milling around and talking and laughing... The service started at 12 with the organist playing a very soft, quiet version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow." There were bible verses read (all picked out by Carol.)

Then came the reading of "The Butterfly" - a children's book Carol had written and illustrated for her grandkids - to explain to them about death.

Then came the most wonderful/difficult part - a message written by Carol to her friends and family. I wish I had a copy of it because it was beautiful and comforting - however if I was by myself reading it, I would have been in the fetal position on the floor... I remember these parts:

"I will always be with you."

And to her family:

"I will see you graduate from college. I will be at your weddings. I will know your babies."

The service ended with a HORRIBLY sung version of "O Happy Day" by the crowd. And then we all busted out laughing at how bad it was and how Carol was probably laughing her head off.

After the service, I did not attend the graveside cermony as I needed to get back home and to the hospital to see My Dad.

Mom had called and Dad was moved to a "real" room and that the Doc told them that on a scale of Small to Large, the heart damage was on the "small side of small." BIG SIGH OF RELIEF.

So Mimi stays with Stella and Nancy and Cissy do tag-team to come help her. Matt and I head up to the hospital and hang out in the room and visitors are in and out... SO MANY PEOPLE.

We all chat and laugh and the big topic of discussion is now that Mom is calling her "Nurse Rachett" and things will DRAMATICALLY change - esp Dad's horrendous eating habits. He does eat well with us but for lunches (when no one with with him) it's all fried and hamburgers and chimichangas and the like....

I truly think this has scared him to the point where he will finally follow through with some healthy eating habits - BUT no matter what anyone said yesterday, he would turn it around to be about hamburgers.

My uncle Rusty was talking about a wedding that he had to attend this weekend in White Stone and Dady pipes up with "are they serving hamburgers at that wedding?"

And then later as we were leaving, Matt says "We'll see you a bit later" and Dad says "You don't have to come back up here" and Matt says "But we wanted to have a party in your room" and Dad says "a hamburger party?"

Nut.

So after we left the hospital, we came home and got Stella and Toby and got back on the road to New Kent where John and Cece had friends and family gathering. It was really nice. They had all been out swimming in the lake most of the day and having some food and drinks (some of which were spiked, right Johnny boy?) Everyone had a nice time and told stories and relaxed. Carols grandchildren are precious - they played with Stella and were SO good with her. It was nice.

So, here we are today. Stella is taking her morning nap and she'll have lunch and we'll head to the hospital so she can see Grandpa and he can see his "Stinker boo."

You can't make this stuff up, people!

My Dad had a major heart attack today.

He is ok. It's all going to be ok. Thank you, God.

I'll update with the "story" sometime tomorrow - after Carol's memorial service.

What a week.

5-22-07

Carol Bock passed away.

Cece had one hand; John had the other. Rob and Tim (her sons) and Mary (her daughter-in-law) were there and Betty Jo her friend and minister said a prayer.

I'll post details of the arrangements when I get them. Thank you ALL for your continued prayers.

This is the angel that hangs on the front door of the Bocks' home. I love her.

We're Close

I just called the house for my daily annoying "Give me an update" call and Mary, Cece's sister-in-law, answered and all she said was "We're close" so I just told her that I would hear from Cece soon, no worries, just calling to check in.

Well, 3 minutes later Cece called back. She said she was just having a weep.

Carol is now unable to speak... Not a lot of energy left in that little body to form words. The Hospice nurse had warned them of this phase. The nurse is there all day today which is good - and I know it takes some pressure off the Fam since there is a "professional" in the house.

Now that this blog has become an update for all of Cece's fans (she laughed when I said that, by the way) she asked me to post a message to all of her friends in LA who have called her and left messages. And this is a direct quote:

"Please tell them I am so sorry I have not called them back because I am a fucking wreck."

That's my girl!!

I'll keep you all posted...and please, if you want to get a message to her, feel free to e-mail me (creekmore212@yahoo.com) and I will print it and get it to her or whatever! Anything. Her friends in CA are very important to her - and you are important to ME because you are her support system in that far away land (Hollywood) and I am grateful she has you all.

I can only imagine.

I am so exhausted I can hardly see straight. Today was the big event at work that I have been helping plan and execute...and I had to leave the house at 6:30 am and got home at 6:30 pm. NOT fun. But now it's over...until the next one (end of June.)

Yesterday, I went out to New Kent to visit Cece and Fam. We had talked on the phone about how she didn't really have anything to wear to Carol's funeral (sounds morbid, but it is a topic of conversation with everyone; including Carol Bock.) So, yesterday morning I went shopping and got a few things for Cece in hopes they would work for her - and MAN was that fun to shop for a skinny person!! I got her an awesome pair of white pants (Carol said no black!) and 2 gorgeous shirts... And everything fit and looked fab on her... I was so glad. I also made a big batch of truffles for John.

Carol is wasting away - physically and mentally. The difference between yesterday and those pictures below (which was only 6 days) is astounding. Like Cece said yesterday "It's just too fast." It's like this phase of her sickness has been SOOOO fast; even though she has been sick for 10 years.

I have not heard from anyone today...but on my drive home, Carol popped into my head and I wondered how today was going for them...and the beginning notes of "I can only imagine" by Mercy Me came on the radio RIGHT as I started thinking about her. That song gives me chills anyway - and then to hear it right at that moment when it's not that popular on the radio anymore....

I took it as a sign. And I didn't cry - because it felt RIGHT.

I Can Only Imagine Lyrics
» Mercy Me

I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine

[Chorus]

I can only imagine [x2]

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you

I'm wearing a bright red dress

I just talked to Cece for my "Daily Annoying Call in to Check on Everyone" and she said it's the same old same old. Carol is pretty much awake in the mornings until around noon and then is kind of "out" for the rest of the day... She did say that when she is awake, she is cracking everyone up. She asked John this morning to go buy some "Kill Me" juice and when he asked if he could get that at Southern States, she said "Yes, but be careful when you buy it because the police may follow you." She then asked Cece to put some "Kill a Person" in her toothpaste.

I was also informed that no one is allowed to wear black to her funeral. Carol said "But a black skirt would be ok."

I am waiting for Stella to wake up so we can run to Wal-Mart to get truffle ingrediants. John really liked them and I wanted to make a delivery/visit tomorrow.

So here are the amazing pictures that Greg took when he was here this week... I'm sure they won't mind if I share as I have all but 10 readers, maybe. :)

Carol drawing - she is an amazing artist.

She's ready to go.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, where to start.

I last updated about Monday evening when we all sat out on the deck and laughed and reminisced and "broke in" Greg.

On Tuesday, I went to work and ran around like a chicken. (It is absolutely crazy here lately.)

Around 4pm I called Cece for an update and she was hysterical. She just kept saying "Mom's in a coma. She won't wake up. We don't know what's going on..." So I made her get off the phone and I just got in the car and drove out there. (They live about 30 minutes outside of town - in the woods on a lake - in paradise, basically.) So, I got there and stood in the driveway and called from my cell phone. John answered and said Cece was with her Mama...so I asked for Greg. I KNEW he didn't want to be in the middle of this with a family he just met.....I wouldn't want to be.... So I thought I would rescue him for awhile and then Cece wouldn't feel so bad about having to "entertain" him (Although he was fine - Cece always feels responsible for everyone's well-being...just like her Mama....) So anyway, John said he had given Greg the keys to Carol's car and some directions to Panera Bread in Mechanicsville... so off I went.

I arrived at Panera Bread and walked up to his table as he was typing away on his ibook and I scared the crap out of him when I busted out "Well you never know who you'll run into in Mechanicsville, Virginia!" And then we just sat and talked for 2 hours. We talked about his job and Cece and their life in LA... It was great and I really enjoyed the time getting to know him. I'm SO happy for Cece.

So, at around 7:30pm, Cece calls and says that Carol woke up. She was sitting up and eating some dinner and chatting away. I could tell this was "bittersweet" - as nice as it is to have her here, they dealt with her "death" all day long - truly thinking this was it - holding a family vigil at her bedside - and then she wakes up and you don't really know how to feel.... The hospice nurse says this may go on for awhile and not to be shocked if she sleeps for 23 hours a day and has one good lucid hour...

They just want relief for Carol. They thought that had gone over that last big hill on the roller coaster. Only to learn they have to get back on it again.

And the most disappointed person??? Carol.

So that was Tuesday.

On Wednesday, I worked until Noon and decided to take off the afternoon. Greg was leaving to go back to LA at 5pm and I wanted to bring Stella out there for him to meet her, and Stella always cheers up everyone around her so I thought the Bock Fam could use a dose of smiley baby. It worked like a charm.

Carol lit up when she saw Miss Stella - and Greg took pictures I will add to this page when I get some... John said his usual "Stella!!!" (like in Streetcar Named Desire) and kept bringing Raffe (Carol's Cat) to Stella for her to pet. Everyone got a real kick out of her - and she was good as gold, as always.

I sat by Carol's bed and held her hand and she looked at me dead in my eyes and said:

"I'm ready to go."

I said "I know you are..." And she said again:

"I'm ready to go. I'm praying to go. I'm ready."

At one point, John left to go to the dump and to the store for some Yuengling Black and Tan (for the boys, you know - he don't drink that stuff. wink, wink) He wasn't gone for 5 minutes when the bandage on Carol's chest fell off - she wanted Cece to put on new dressing....and she could not do it alone. So I helped.

I have never even heard of this before, but the cancer is moving to the outside. It has been for months but it's at its peak right now. It's just breaking down her body - and now her skin. And you can SEE it. Usually you can't SEE Cancer. To be nice, she looks like a 3rd degree burn victim on her chest and part of her back.

She doesn't show anyone. Ever. But I'm family - she says.

As we were helping her, she said "I feel like a babe." (She meant to say Baby.)

And Cece says "Yes, Mama, you are a hot babe."

And Carol says "Nobody gives a shit about my little tits. That's a poem, you know."

I said "Did you write that poem?"

She said "Yes I did."

The whole time we were undressing her, cleaning her wounds, putting on a new gel bandage on her, lifting her up, putting her back down, dressing her again..... all I could think about was little Cece and little Stephanie in the back of Carol's Nissan as she picked us up from 5th grade for a sleep over. And here we are now.....

The whole time we were doing this, Greg was tending to Stella out on the deck. I kept peaking out the window to make she she wasn't making his life hell...and they were just chatting and talking and playing. The 5th or so time I looked out the window, she's got her head on his shoulder - asleep - and he is just looking out over the lake.

I said "Cece. Look at this. If you don't marry this boy, I will beat you silly."

After a little while longer, Stella and I gathered our things (and with a 10 month old, there is a lot of "gathering of things.") and we said good-bye.

I think that was my last good-bye to Carol Bock. And I am at peace with that. She looked at me in my face and told me what she wants - and I believe her - and I want her to go. I want her to get out of here and go on to a MUCH better place with no pain and suffering.

It's amazing to watch a person die as they lived - as a spiritual, peaceful, positive, strong, amazing woman. I'm praying that God will take her very very soon. She wants it. And if Carol Bock, of all people, is ready to go - then let her go.

We'll all be ok. Cece will be ok. John will be ok. Because they had one helluva guardian angel whispering in their ears.

They'll NEVER forget to take their vitamins again.

P.S.
I went to BJs yesterday and bought giant bottles of Women's One-a-Day, Flaxseed and Fish Oil, and B-Complex.

Nature

I got to Carol Bock's yesterday around 4:30 or so...and I walk in the house and there is no one to be found. I look out the back and there is Carol sitting on the back deck in her new wheelchair that Hospice brought - looking out over the lake enjoying the beautiful weather. That was an awesome sight.

She is still with us. And actually, doing really really well. She's drugged up - but loving it because it's the first time in 10 years she hasn't felt tremendous pain. She's as feisty as ever and had us in hysterical laughter much of the time. It was me, Cece, John, Rob (Cece's older brother), Carol, and Greg (more on him in a minute) out on the deck just chatting and laughing. John was kicked back with his Guiness (which I had not seen him do in many many years) and was enjoying himself. We watched the birds ...there was one little yellow bird that kept coming so close. Greg (being from LA where there aren't any trees) was just amazed at the NATURE and was quietly taking digital pictures of the birds and the lake and the boat and spider webs... and I watched him secretly take videos and pictures of Carol when no one was watching. Those are going to be a treasure.

Greg. I LOVE HIM! I'm so happy for Cece I could bust. First of all, to fly clear across the country to meet your girlfriend's family for the first time and to be thrust into this situation... I can't even imagine. He was incredible - the way he interacts with everyone, the way he is with Carol (fixing her pillows and the way he chats with her...) and most importantly, the way he is with Cece. He loves her, it's obvious, and she needs someone amazing who will take care of her and not COMPETE with her - like all of her past actor boyfriends. They all get jealous of her talent and eventually get resentful and weird... I don't think Greg will do that...he's confident in himself and HE IS SO CUTE! And he has a really cool job at ABC right next to the Grey's Anatomy set and he said McDreamy is a really nice guy in person. That makes everything better.

Anyway, I KNOW Carol Bock was so happy to have him there and maybe that's why she is in such his spirits and seems to be "lifted" a bit physically.

As strange as it is to say this, to be a part of this experience is pretty amazing.

Who knows how long this will continue...I'm not really worried about it. I'm just enjoying each day I can. I'm enjoying each laugh and each speech about what vitamins I need to take.
